The Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov passed away

Today October 11, at the age of 86, the Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov died. This is the first man who went into outer space. Born May 30, 1934 in the village of Listvyanka. He graduated from the 10th Military Aviation School in Kremenchug and the Military Aviation School of Pilots in Chuguevsk. In 1960, he was enrolled in the first detachment of Soviet cosmonauts.

For the first time Leonov made a space flight in March 1965. He was the co-pilot of the Voskhod-2 ship commanded by Pavel Belyaev. During this flight, Leonov made the first ever spacewalk that lasted 12 minutes. Moreover, when returning, the astronaut was faced with an emergency situation: his spacesuit was swollen, so he had to relieve pressure and, contrary to instructions, climbed into the hatch not with his feet, but with his head forward. In the late 1960s, Leonov was preparing to fly to the moon and could become the first person to step on its surface if the USSR won the “moon race”.

July 1975, Leonov participated in the famous Soyuz-Apollo flight and the first ever docking of spacecraft of the USSR and the USA. Leonov – twice Hero of the Soviet Union, awarded with many orders and medals.
